The United Church of Canada is a "conciliar" church: that is, it works through councils. These are called "courts" at present and there are four of them. Made up of clergy and laity alike, the Presbytery is the court of the church that has the role of a "bishop": supporting and supervising congregations and ministers.
The Court is made up of all paid accountables: diaconal ministers, ordained ministers and retirees, and Staff Associates from Pastoral Charges or congregations within the Presbytery; plus lay representatives from all Pastoral Charges. The number of lay representatives is determined by the number of members of the Pastoral Charge.
All members of Presbytery expected to serve on a committee of Presbytery. Members of pastoral chargers who are not members of Presbytery can also serve on Presbytery committees. There is a lot of work to be done, and volunteers are welcomed. For information about opportunities to serve, please contact the Chair of the Nominating Committee.
