A number of congregations in Halton Presbytery provide a low-maintenance mid-week connection for members. The following are two of these which serve as examples that are easy for any congregation to replicate.
Every Thursday morning at Cooksville United Church
from 10:30 until noon coffee is on for anyone who wants to drop in and chat.
Conversation often flows from the brief devotion that is shared.
This time of interaction and fellowship offers an opportunity for people
to talk about their joys or sorrows.
Rev. Smith says he finds this is also an ideal time to find out
who in the church community is ill or troubled,
and who may need some special care.
This program requires an investment of time from those willing to
stoke the coffee pot, provide some goodies and clean-up afterward.
Sheridan United Church brings together the comfort of
afternoon tea and old familiar hymns to enhance their
bi-monthly Wednesday connection.
At 1:30, just as the water has been boiled,
and several copies of various hymn books are set out, the singing begins.
Those who attend are encouraged to shout out their favourite hymns
which often include "new" Voices United hymns along side of
"oldies and goldies" from The Hymnary.
Occasionally Dr. Paul suggests a hymn that he has been thinking about using in a worship service and the group tries it out and gives their blessing on it-or not. Often a member of the group brings a devotional story or a mind bending quiz that provokes discussion, or good natured ribbing.
Hosting this event requires a flexible, good natured piano player as well as someone to make the tea and clean up.
Programs like these are easy to provide. They require a commitment from one or two people each week to plug in the kettle and to take turns supplying goodies.
Regular promotion is essential is to ensure newcomers to the congregation are fully aware they too are always welcome to gather with those who come together mid week to celebrate community and share their faith.
