Lowville United Church

A unique men's group has developed at Lowville United Church where a group of eight dedicated men meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a repairs work bee.

This group, officially called the property committee, came together when some quick repairs were needed following a flood. As often happens, one thing leads to another, and so they started to notice there were quite a few things around the church in need of repair - enough to keep them busy on a regular basis.

Their tasks range from simple repairs to larger projects and there isn't much the group won't tackle. For example, their current project is bigger than usual as they work at the multi-week task of covering exposed duct work. They keep their eyes open at the church and manse for any sign of lights that need replacing, painting that needs freshening, or any number of repairs that make up what chair of the group, Jack Davey, says is a "never ending list."

The logistics of this ministry are simple: a group of willing handy-men, a mutually acceptable time to meet and work, a bag lunch and readiness to tackle the job of the day.

Rev. Lynn Godfrey is very proud of this group that she sees doing foundational work. She says, "this ministry is helpful in a physical as well as a spiritual and nurturing sense as these men come together to care for their church, and for one another." She added that others see it happening and are encouraged to form their own small groups around their gifts and sense of ministry.

Mr. Davey recommends this active ministry to any congregation as an excellent way to keep "the property from running down" and "to enjoy Christian fellowship" in a way that isn't always possible on Sunday morning. Lowville recognizes this ministry as one that offers great rewards as members share faith in action through work and fellowship. As Mr. Davey adds, "It's good for the church, congregation and the group."
