What began with a request for help folding bulletins has blossomed into a significant weekly event for 8-10 people each Friday morning at Walton United Church. This group gathers every Friday - before 9 a.m. and armed with treats - to assist the office staff by folding and assembling the weekly service bulletins. Once that is finished there may be other tasks that range from prep work for Sunday School or Vacation Bible School, assembling the newsletter, making envelopes for mailings, or addressing envelopes to those who missed church and receive a bulletin by mail. There is always something to do, and the group is always busy.
One of the fun challenges put to the group is to try to catch the mistake of the week in the bulletin (not that there always is one)! It has happened that the group has corrected all 250 of the bulletins if a modification was needed!
Whatever the group does, Administrative Assistant Val Waldron says they are "a blessing to the congregation and office staff for all they get done on Friday mornings."
Their contribution to the life and work of the church is really valuable, but has also made a significant difference in the life of many of the participants. Those who may not be comfortable serving in other ministries of the church have found a niche with this group.
This group has become a real community where their Christian fellowship is celebrated with significant events in each other’s lives, continued support for those who are facing challenges, and a genuine care and concern for each other. Occasionally someone will bring in a reflection for discussion, or something about a service will prompt a discussion around Scripture. Reports are this group always has a lot to talk about!
For any church looking to offer people a way to make a significant contribution, this ministry is a highly recommended way to take care of a task that needs doing on a regular basis, and to give members a chance to participate in a meaningful way
